What is the Rec Pass?

The Recreation Pass allows a volunteer affiliated with a fire/rescue department in Montgomery County to get a free pass to use pools and fitness facilities owned by the county.

How do I qualify for the free Rec Pass?

Volunteer members of an LFRD who earned 50 LOSAP points in the previous year are eligible for the pass. Your department will give you an annual LOSAP certification form around February each year. If you earned 50 or more points, you’ll be eligible for the pass.

Is this only for firefighters?

No, if you are a member of an LFRD and earned 50 or more LOSAP points the previous year, you are eligible for the free Rec Pass. Firefighters, EMS, rescue, administrative, auxiliary, fire board members – it only matters that you earned 50 or more LOSAP points.

How long is the free Rec Pass good for?

The Rec Pass is valid for one year after you apply for it. It does not expire on December 31st. You can always check with a desk clerk at a county facility and they can tell you when your pass expires.

What happens when I submit the electronic application?

The Recreation department checks to see if you have an existing Rec Pass and adds another year to it. If you didn’t have a Rec Pass already, they approve you for a new pass.

How will I know I’ve been approved?

Check your email. The Recreation department responds to your request within 2 weeks of you submitting it. Check your spam or junk folders, too.

Once approved, how do I get a card?

Visit a Montgomery County Recreation Center and let the desk clerk know you are a volunteer with MCFRS and have been approved for a free pass. It helps to print out the email you received and take it with you.

I have an existing Rec Pass from last year. When can I apply for my next year?

Within 30 days of your current Rec Pass expiring. If you apply before the 30 day window, your application will be rejected. It is important to check with a desk clerk to find out when your current Rec Pass expires and apply for a new pass inside the 30 day window. You might want to write your expiration date on the pass itself when you get it.

Can members of my family use my pass?

No, the free pass is good for only yourself. However, as an added volunteer benefit, you can purchase a family pass for a 20% discount. Additionally, a new county law says any Montgomery County resident can use the fitness centers for free (not the pool).

What facilities can I use?

The Rec Pass is good for Montgomery County Department of Recreation facilities only. Local facilities, like the Rockville Swim & Fitness Center, are not included.
