Web Accessibility (2026)

Background

Per Federal law, we need to meet new accessibility standards as of April 24, 2026. For your convenience, here are some links to help you understand what you need to know. In the big picture, you want to keep in mind we’re just trying to make your content able to be received properly by as many among your target audiences as possible, factoring in potential physical hurdles they may have. Before you become overwhelmed, you may already be doing much of what’s required. If you want to be asking Dr. Google on your own, the key words to be using in your searches are WCAG 2.1 AA standards.

Penalties: The Federal deadline is April 24, 2026. Posts from prior to that are grandfathered in and so you don’t need to go back and fix years’ worth of posts. However, you are responsible for what comes thereafter.

  • DOJ: Per TEBS, the first violation will be $75K and subsequent violations will be $115K.
  • Lawsuits: Citizens who feel wronged and advocacy groups alike can sue the government, the department and you.
