Construction began in January 2022 and is expected to be completed in the Winter of 2023/2024.
This childcare center is on Montgomery County Board of Education property and until demolition in early 2022 was in a freestanding modular structure west of Woodlin Elementary School (ES). The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Child Care in Public Space (CCIPS) Program licenses space to Rockville Day Care Association (RDCA) to provide childcare services for approximately 100 children of families in the Woodlin ES community at this location. The center is staffed by approximately 22 people and operates Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM until 6:30 PM. Parking for the childcare center is shared with the elementary school.
The aging modular structure was deemed to be in poor physical condition during a survey conducted in 2020. Prior to demolition, the childcare center had a dedicated playground for children ages 0-5. School-age children enrolled with RDCA used the elementary school playground before and after school.
Early in 2020, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) began designing a structure that would replace the existing Woodlin ES. It was determined that in lieu of building a separate structure for the childcare center, the best use of the site would be to include it within the same structure as the school. DGS, DHHS, MCPS, and their project team, along with RDCA and neighborhood representatives worked together to develop the design and a strategy for completing the project.
Colocation of the school and childcare maximizes the use of the building and site benefitting both entities. The childcare wing will have the capacity to serve up to 97 children in six (6) classrooms and RDCA will have the opportunity to bid for use of supplemental space within the elementary school to serve additional school-age children before and after school hours. The childcare playground is designed for children ages 0-5 and will be used by pre-kindergarten children who attend Woodlin ES. Playgrounds associated with the school are designed for children ages 5-12 and will be used by school-age children who are enrolled for before and/or after care at the childcare center.
Temporary accommodations for the childcare center, including a dedicated playground, were constructed in late 2021 at Parkside Headquarters on Brunett Avenue in Silver Spring. RDCA began providing services there in January 2022 and expect to move back to the new facility when construction is complete in the winter of 2023/2024.
