Design is underway for a new MCPS bus depot to be located at 861 E. Gude Drive, click here to learn more. While simultaneously working on the new MCPS depot, the County is planning a new transit bus depot to support growth of the Ride On bus fleet and the County’s ongoing transition to a zero emissions fleet. In addition, the County is in the process of acquiring the Metro Access Road, which is located along the eastern border of the Jeremiah Park site, and a portion of the cloverleaf at the intersection of Shady Grove Road and the Metro Access Road. The acquisition has been approved by WMATA and State Highway Administration, and would allow buses to enter and exit from the east side of the site, instead of entering on Crabbs Branch Way.

Jeremiah Park is the 45-acre portion of the former County Service Park located on the east side of Crabbs Branch Way. The current Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Shady Grove Depot is located on the Jeremiah Park site. In 2012, the Preliminary Plan for Jeremiah Park was approved by the Montgomery Planning Board to include 345 townhomes and 344 multi-family units, and an eight-acre elementary school and park site. The Preliminary Plan contemplates relocation of the MCPS Shady Grove Depot off site.

Relocating the depot has been challenging due to the size of the fleet and operations to be located; a dearth of large light industrial land parcels available; and general opposition from communities to having the depot near residential areas. In 2024 the County explored an option to consolidate the existing transportation operations to the rear of the property and create a new shared use facility for MCDOT Ride-On and MCPS. This reorientation then intended to leave room for mixed-use development as well as the park and school that are envisioned in the Sector Plan. Subsequent to this land planning effort, DGS learned of an opportunity to locate a portion of the MCPS buses at 861 E. Gude Drive, Rockville. 861 E. Gude Drive is located approximately 2.5 miles from Jeremiah Park and in a light industrial area. The reduction and removal of the MCPS program from the shared use depot at Jeremiah Park allows for a significant shift in the Jeremiah Park redevelopment project’s scope, timing and financials.
