The primary purpose of the Flower Avenue Separated Bike Lanes project is to improve bicyclist and pedestrian safety and comfort in the corridor. Proposed improvements are needed to provide a physically separated bikeway and mitigation of conflicts at all other uncontrolled access points by means of consistent, intuitive, and highly visible signing and marking treatments.
The main component of the project will be separated bike lanes along Flower Avenue from Piney Branch Road (MD 320) to Arliss Street – approximately 0.2 miles. The project will also include streetscape improvements for pedestrian/ADA access, transit access, roadway/pavement, parking, drainage, stormwater management, traffic signals, signing and marking, plantings, and lighting.
The project is currently in the beginning stages of design, and the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is working to advance the design to 30%. Several potential concepts have been identified and will be presented at a community meeting on May 9, 2023. The exact facility type has not yet been determined, but it could be a protected bike lane, a buffered bike lane, or a two-way cycle track.
The community meeting will be an opportunity for residents, businesses, and other stakeholders to learn more about the project, provide feedback on the concepts, and ask questions to the project team.
We hope you will join us for this important discussion and help us shape the future of Flower Avenue. Together, we can make it safer and more accessible for cyclists and everyone who uses this road.
The Flower Avenue Separated Bike Lanes project is currently funded through 30% design. We expect to complete this process in late 2023.
Initial preliminary alternatives will be presented to the community in May 2023. The selected alternative will be advanced to 30% design, and we expect to present that design to the community in late 2023 or early 2024.
Once the 30% concept design is complete, we will pursue the final design as funding is available. No construction timeline is available yet.
