Report Financial Fraud
If you are a Montgomery County resident or business and suspect that you have been the victim of financial fraud, refer to the following suggested steps for assistance.
If someone uses your name to file a fraudulent tax return with the IRS or State of Maryland
- Call 301 279 8000 to file an Identity Theft Report with the Montgomery County Police Department

Maryland Tax Returns
Call 800 638 2937 between 8:30 AM-4:30 PM,Monday through Friday, to advise the State of Maryland
Comptroller's Office. -
Federal Tax Returns
Call 800 829 1040 or report online to advise the Internal Revenue Service.

File a “fraud alert” with one of the three credit monitoring agencies (i.e. Experian, Trans Union, Equifax).

Optional: File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. Add "IRS Return Fraud" to the comments in your complaint.
If you are being threatened or coerced to pay money to the IRS via Western Union, Moneygram, etc.

Hang up and call 301 279 8000 to report the threat to the Montgomery County Police Department

If you think you owe taxes:
Call 800 829 1040 or report online to have an IRS employee help you with payment questions.

If you do not owe taxes:
Fill out the "IRS Impersonation Scam" form on TIGTA's website, or call TIGTA at 800 366 4484.

Forward scam e-mails to [email protected]. Do not open any attachments or click on any links in those e-mails.

Optional: File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. Add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments in your complaint.
If you suspect that you are a victim of any other Financial Fraud
Call 301 279 8000 to report the incident to the Montgomery County Police Department.
