Assistant State’s Attorney Position Descriptions

Assistant State’s Attorney: This entry level positions is assigned to the District Court Division and responsible for screening potential cases, producing discovery for defense counsel prior to scheduled court proceedings, and preparing appropriate cases for trial. Case Preparation includes contacting, interviewing, and preparing victims and witnesses for court appearances, being Prepared to argue evidential motions and making plea offers when appropriate. Employees will handle bonds, evidential hearings, motions, trials and sentencing; draft routine pleadings; and communicate appropriate information with the citizens of Montgomery County.
Starting Salary at $80,000.


Lateral Assistant State’s Attorney: This position may be assigned to different specialized divisions within the Office. Starting Salary is Negotiable based on experience.
Both positions are Full Time with Montgomery County Government Benefits.
Minimum Requirements: Candidates must have graduated from an accredited law school and be admitted to the Maryland State Bar.

Staff Position

Legal Assistant - Grant Funded:

Grade 18 Salary: $57,907-91,347:

The State’s Attorney’s Office for Montgomery County, Maryland, is seeking a talented, driven, and customer-oriented individual to join our legal assistant team. The legal assistant will support the work of Assistant State’s Attorneys by assisting with administrative tasks and reviewing body worn camera and other digital evidence. Contacts are generally with attorneys, witnesses, law enforcement, County employees and Federal and State legal staff.

Examples of duties and responsibilities:
  • Review police body-worn and in-car video and audio files and mobile phone data; scan various documents and pictures, police reports, police interviews, statements, and various reports from a multitude of backend and internet-based systems.
  • Prepare summary memoranda for the assigned attorney that details the content of the body-worn and in-car video. • Provide a chronological description of the body-worn video with pertinent sections noted.
  • Prepare and present digital evidence and exhibits at trial using Microsoft PowerPoint, OneDrive, and/or Excel.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of substantive and procedural criminal law.
  • Knowledge of legal terminology, legal communication, documentation, standards, and conventions.
  • Knowledge of rules of evidence, and the skills necessary to evaluate the adequacy and/or admissibility of evidence.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Windows, Office 365, Adobe Pro, and using various Internet search engines for conducting legal and non-legal research.
  • Computer competency, social media competency, and the ability to process digital forensic evidence.
  • Ability to assist in case preparation and ensure information is lawfully released or withheld.
  • Ability to perform legal review, and investigative and research work.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in presenting ideas orally and in written form.
  • Ability to follow direction, organize, and prioritize assignments, coordinate competing tasks under tight deadlines, and utilize computer technology in the course of performing work.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Ability to maintain automated and manual filing systems.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or GED. College degree preferred. Language: Bi-lingual in Spanish is preferred, but not required.
