Internship for High School Students
Students from local high schools (entering or presently in the 12th grade) are assigned to support staff or assigned to an Assistant State's Attorney, working in various divisions of the office such as, Community Outreach Division, Discovery Division, District Court Division, Information Technology Division or Special Victims Division.
The students' responsibilities may include pulling case files and assisting with the preparation of a court docket, up-keeping of files, scanning, and may on occasion be asked to review 9-1-1 recordings. The students also have opportunities to attend in-office presentations and observe court proceedings.
High school students are needed either during the school year or during the summer.

Internship for Undergraduate College Students
Montgomery County State's Attorney's undergraduate college interns have the unique opportunity to work on an array of cases in our District Court or Circuit Court divisions. These are non-salaried positions offered during the Fall, Spring, or summer semesters requiring the intern to work (2) full days per week. The duties vary - depending on caseloads, department assignments, and intern availability.
The intern can be expected to: assist with preparing court dockets by retrieving case files, obtaining, and reviewing necessary evidence, and contacting State's witnesses Pre-trial. The intern may also be asked to observe bodycam videos or listen to 9-1-1 recordings or jail calls and take notes.
Presentations by State's Attorney John McCarthy and staff members are scheduled during the semester, and the intern is encouraged to attend. They also are given opportunities to observe a variety of court proceedings.

Internship for Law School Students
Montgomery County State's Attorney's law interns have the unique opportunity to receive hands-on experiences in the preparation of the prosecution of criminal cases in either our District Court or Circuit Court divisions. These are non-salaried positions that are offered during the school year and the summer. Applications are accepted year-round, and we interview candidates on a rolling basis.
District Court Division: intern plays· a critical role as a "Screener" acting as a liaison between the citizens and the legal system, educating citizens to understand the workings of the criminal justice system, gathering information, and reviewing evidence, writing factual narratives of the events, making a recommendation to the Assistant State's Attorney on how the case should progress. In addition to screening cases, the intern aids our Assistant State's Attorneys in the courtroom once a week.
Circuit Court Division (includes: Gang, General Felony, Juvenile, Major Crimes, Special Prosecution and Special Victims units): intern is responsible for legal research and writing as it applies to assigned cases, watching and taking notes from bodycam videos, 9-1-1 recordings or jail call recordings, crime scene inspections with the Assistant State's Attorney assigned, obtaining and reviewing evidence, redaction of documents to be introduced in court, attend Pre-trial conferences and trial team support in the courtroom.

Internship for Post Graduate Fellowships
The Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office offers one-year fellowships, in either our District Court division (handling criminal, misdemeanor cases) or Circuit Court division (which includes: Gang, General Felony, Juvenile, Major Crimes, Special Victims and Special Prosecution units); which afford Post Law School Graduates an opportunity to research, write, receive mentoring, courtroom exposure and experience the atmosphere of a prosecution office. All units of the office are located in Rockville, Maryland.

Applicants may or may not secure their own funding. The Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office is unable to remit funds directly to the applicant.
