S.M.A.R.T. Youth Advisory Council

The S.M.A.R.T. Youth Advisory Council is a program formed by the Sayles office that aims to increase youth participation in local government. Guided by the tenets of the S.M.A.R.T. agenda, students have the opportunity to advocate for creative solutions to problems in our communities that significantly affect young people.

I am looking for enthusiastic young people ready to give back to their community who:

  • Live in Montgomery County and are in grades 7-12 and age 13 and older
  • Can commit to five mandatory meetings at 5:30 p.m. on Monday for the following dates: Feb. 5 (in-person), Feb. 12 (virtual), Feb. 26 (virtual), Mar. 18 (in-person), Apr. 8 (in-person)
  • Are interested in participating in optional meetings/events such as public hearings, community events, youth engagement opportunities, etc.
  • Want to support and advance my S.M.A.R.T. policy agenda
  • Are passionate about racial equity and social justice

Members of the Youth Advisory Council will gain necessary experience learning more about the inner processes of the Montgomery County Council. Members will work with my team and me to share youth priorities on budget proposals, legislation, community programs, health and safety initiatives, and more. As such, we seek students who are passionate about Montgomery County and want to give back to their community. Please feel free to email us at councilmember.sayles@montgomerycountymd.gov if you have any questions or want to learn more about this project. Students who are accepted will be eligible for SSL hours. Applications for our Winter/Spring 2024 cohort are closed.
