Education Listening Tour

As the Chair of the Education and Culture Committee (E&C), I plan to visit every high school cluster and various Parent Teacher Associations to listen to our students, families, and staff. For more information, please contact our Scheduler, D'Ante Thaggard, at  D'Ante.Thaggard@montgomerycountymd.gov. Stay updated with the Education Listening Tour by subscribing to my Newsletter and following me on Twitter and Facebook. Here are some highlights from past visits:

Councilmember Jawando participates in an assembly with elementary schoolers.

I enjoyed visiting Arcola Elementary School, a year-round innovative school! Along with reading to K-4 students, I hosted a Q&A with 5th graders. Thank you to Principal Jean-Phillipe & staff.

Gaithersburg Cluster (March 2023)

Councilmember Jawando, Councilmember Katz, and Gaithersburg High School students smile at the camera.

I had a great time with my friend Councilmember Sidney Katz at Gaithersburg High School. We met with staff and students from the SGA and Trojan Times for a great conversation about public safety, equity, better serving our Emergent Multilingual Learners and newcomers, restorative justice, and other critical issues to our schools. We also stopped in to see some of the workforce training that is happening.

Poolesville Cluster (February 2023)

Councilmember Jawando and Councilmember Balcombe tour Poolesville construction site alongside school leadership.

Councilmember Jawando shakes hand with student.

Thank you, Poolesville Elementary School and Poolesville High School, for welcoming me into your schools for my Education Listening Tour. It was a pleasure to be joined by Councilmember Marilyn Balcombe for the special visit. I appreciated the chance to have direct and candid talks with students, parents, and staff during the visits to learn about their specific needs to improve the ability of our students and teachers to thrive in the classroom. It was great to get an update on the construction at Poolesville High School, which is slated to be complete by the 2024-2025 school year. The Poolesville community takes great pride in their schools, evident in the caring atmosphere inside both schools. Keep up the great work.

Northwood Cluster (January 2023)

I kicked off my Education Listening Tour in the Northwood cluster visiting Kemp Mill Elementary School and Northwood High School!
