Save As You Throw
Return to Recycling and Trash Service for single-family homes
Montgomery County is evaluating a system known as "Save As You Throw," to assess variable rate pricing for trash collection and disposal, based on the amount of waste a household sets out as trash.
You and everyone living in your household are critically important in our ability to successfully evaluate the Save As You Throw program. Your participation and feedback, along with experiences gained, will provide valuable information to inform future decisions impacting all single-family homes in the County.
Your participation in the Save As You Throw program is greatly appreciated. You will continue to receive County-provided trash and recycling collection services on your current collection day along with an enhanced level of recycling collection service. You will also receive a wheeled trash cart with a lid and a new cart with a lid to recycle bottles, jars, cans, and containers, as well as a wheeled cart with a locking lid to recycle food scraps and yard trim. Thank you for helping Montgomery County reduce waste and recycle more, as we aim towards Zero Waste!

Collections
- All materials will be collected curbside on your designated collection day (Thursday).
- You may use your existing trash container for any excess bagged trash that does not fit in the new 35-gallon or 65-gallon trash cart that you select.
- You may use your existing 18- or 22-gallon blue recycling bins for any excess bottles, jars, cans, and containers that don’t fit in the new 35-gallon blue wheeled cart with the lime green lid.
- Included with the 35-gallon green organics recycling cart, you will receive a food scraps recycling starter kit that includes an in-kitchen countertop food scraps container, two (2) boxes of 90 compostable bag liners for storing food scraps before placing them in the wheeled cart, and educational materials.
- Yard trim (grass clippings, leaves, and garden trimmings) can be mixed with food scraps and placed in the new 35-gallon organics recycling cart with the locking lid (please do not place bamboo in the 35-gallon green wheeled cart). Any excess yard trim, and bamboo, can still be placed in paper lawn bags or in reusable containers with a Yard Trim decal. Branches may still be bundled with twine for collection. All food scraps must be placed in the locking cart.
- Missed Collections. If your refuse and recycling containers are not serviced by 5 p.m. on your regular collection day, please call MC311 by dialing 311 or 240-777-0311 (if calling from outside of Montgomery County). Leave your containers at the curb and we will arrange for our collector to service your cart the next day.
How will I recycle my food scraps in the organics recycling cart?
- Place the compostable bag in the in-kitchen bin that you received, to act as a liner.
- Separate your food scraps for recycling from other waste by placing the food scraps in the in-kitchen bin (or any other temporary storage container of your own that you prefer to use).
- When full, tie the compostable bag of food scraps closed and place the bag of food scraps into the 35-gallon green wheeled food scraps recycling cart with the locking lid.
- Add any yard trim, such as grass clippings, leaves, garden trimmings, and flowers into the 35-gallon wheeled cart (please, do not put bamboo in the 35-gallon green wheeled cart). If you have excess yard trim or bamboo, please place the excess yard trim or bamboo in paper yard trim bags or in reusable containers with a yard trim decal. Branches can be bundled with twine and placed next to the cart. Please do not place any food scraps in the paper yard trim bags or in any other reusable containers. The mixed food scraps and yard trim will be collected together by one truck and will be transported to a composting facility in the region, where they will be recycled and processed into a nutrient rich soil amendment for use to improve soil structure.
