Plumbing/Gasfitting Licensing & Inspections

Plumbing refers to the conduits or pipes which bring water into the house and discharge water out of the house. Modern materials used today can include copper and various types of plastic piping. Individuals and contractors who install or repair plumbing lines are required to be licensed by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC). Please note that the cities of Rockville and Gaithersburg have their own water authorities and therefore require that plumbers who operate within their limits must be licensed with them, whether or not they are licensed with   WSSC.
You may also contact WSSC to have them inspect newly installed major appliances such as water heaters and furnaces.
The Office of Consumer Protection is empowered to investigate complaints against plumbers. Should you suspect your plumber has engaged in a deceptive trade practice or misrepresented the nature or quality of work contracted and paid for, you may submit a written complaint to the Office of Consumer Protection along with any supporting documents or papers in order to initiate an investigation. Should an investigation determine that the contractor has violated County law, the violator may be subject to a Class A civil citation.
