Transfer Station Tipping Floor
For your safety, beginning January 2, 2023, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) enforcement will begin on the main tipping floor. You will not be permitted to access the tipping floor and dump without this required PPE: HIGH VISIBILITY VEST, HARD HAT, and CLOSED TOE SHOES. Without the required PPE, you will be asked to exit the site and come back once you have obtained it.

Residential Waste

  • NO Out of County waste is allowed  
  • ALL Residents must provide proof of residency
  • All loads over 500 lbs. must be weighed at the scales and pay the required fee

Commercial Waste

NO OUT-OF-COUNTY WASTE IS ALLOWED OR WILL BE ACCEPTED 

  • DO NOT bring waste generated from outside of the County. The Montgomery County Transfer Station and Material Recovery Facility does not accept waste or other material that is generated from outside of Montgomery County and will be turned away 
  • Commercial/Business Loads must be generated within the County  
  • All contractors must provide verification of job location or county of origin
  • If you are not able to verify that the material has originated from within the County you will not be permitted to dump

Guidelines

Shingles and Other Roofing Materials

We do not accept shingles or roofing materials of any kind. For more information on alternate disposal facilities, please view or download the Shingles & Other Roofing Materials Disposal Flyer.

Car Parts
We do not accept car parts for disposal or recycling at the Shady Grove Transfer Station. You may contact a local mechanic shop or a scrap metal business to dispose of car parts.

Transporting materials

You must bring your materials to the Transfer Station by car, truck, van or similar vehicle. Walking or riding bicycles, motorcycles, or electric scooters are prohibited at the Transfer Station.

HOA Bulk Collection Drop-offs

The Transfer Station will permit Homeowner’s Associations within Montgomery County to drop off two (2) bulk collections free of charge each calendar year, with permission from Transfer Station management. Review the drop-off procedures.

Transfer Station Hours:

  • 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday (both entrances)
  • 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday (Shady Grove Road entrance only)
SUNDAY OPERATION – To ensure the efficient flow of traffic on Frederick Road (355), to prevent dangerous traffic backup, and reduce extended wait times at the Public Unloading Facility (PUF), the Transfer Station Entrance located at 16101 Frederick Road (355), will be closed on Sundays, Holidays, and other times when the scale house is closed to commercial traffic. All persons and vehicles using the Transfer Station during these times should enter through the "Truck Entrance" located at 16055 Shady Grove Road between Frederick Road (355) and CarMax.

Residency

Bring proof of Montgomery County residency or evidence that waste was generated in Montgomery County. This is required, and we may ask for it at any time.

COVID-19

Customers using the facility must continue to practice social distancing. Face covering is strongly encouraged for yours and our personnel safety.

Poolesville Beauty Spot

The Poolesville Beauty Spot located at 19200 Jerusalem Road, Poolesville MD 20837, is open. Montgomery County residents wishing to discard bulk trash (up to 499 pounds) should bring the material to the Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station located at 16101 Frederick Road, Derwood MD 20855.

Sorry, under the Code of Maryland Regulations 26.04.07.03(7), you may not scavenge or salvage items from our facilities.
