Germantown Park Stormwater Management Pond and Stream Restoration Project
As a part of Montgomery County's effort to protect our waters a stormwater pond (11178) and a 900-foot section of stream within the Germantown Park community were selected for restoration to help reduce the impacts of stormwater runoff in our streams. Pond 11178 is located at the north end of the Germantown Park Maintenance yard. The stream restoration area extends upstream of pond 11178 900 feet between Sage Terrace and Tarragon Way.
Several public events have been held throughout the project design phases for residents in the Germantown Park community to learn about the project and to provide input on the design of the project. View more pictures of the project

Public Events and Project Schedule
Germantown Park - Pond 11178
Originally constructed in 1972 as a dry stormwater pond, pond 11178 is located at the north end of Germantown Park Maintenance Yard between Tarragon Way and Bay Leaf Way. After over fifty years the the pond infastructure is in need of repair and replacement. This retrofit project will convert the dry pond to a wet pond to provide improved water quality treatment and protection of downstream stream channels. The project will replace the existing twin 48" corregated risers with a concrete riser and the twin 36" metal pipes that carry water from the pond to the nearby stream will be replaced with twin 54" concrete pipes. The dam embankment will be reconstructed to include safety features that bring the embankment into compliance with current dam saefety regulations. The pond will be regraded to remove accumulated sediment and create a permenant pool of water 3.5 feet deep. Aquatic plants will be planted around the perimerter of the pond to enhanced habitat and water quality, trees and shrubs will also be planted around the pond.

Germantown Park Stream Restoration
The stream restoration area extends upstream of Stormwater Pond 11178 approximately 900 feet. The stream channel in this area is actively eroding resulting of large quantities of sediment being washed downstream into pond 11178. This project will stabilize stream banks and prevent the transport of sediment to the downstream pond. The project will also improve stream habitat for aquatic life. Another goal of the project is to replace trees that need to be removed during construction with native trees, shrubs and perennial plants in the area around the stream. After the project is completed, the stream and the areas around the stream where new trees are planted will be monitored every five years by the County to ensure the structures in the stream remain inplace and the forest area remains healthy and free of invasive species. If needed, corrective actions will be taken by the County to ensure the structures placed in the stream continue to function as designed.
