2020 marks MCPL's fourth Comic Convention. We will be celebrating all things comic and fandom with a variety of events. Come join in the fun at MoComCon! This event is open and accessible to all. We want to attract seasoned comic conventioneers, novices, and the curious of all ages. The event will include a variety of activities, workshops, crafts, displays, exhibits and cosplay — all free of charge.

Art Contest

Draw or paint your favorite comic book, television, or movie character, or create your own. Submit your art at the Information Desk at any MCPL branch. The top 10 entries in each category will be on display at MoComCon in the Silver Spring Library; all other entries will be available for viewing online.

Deadline: Friday, December 6, 5:00 pm.

Guidelines

  • Draw or paint your favorite character from any fandom, book, television show or movie, or invent your own original character!
  • Open to grades K–5, grades 6–12, and adults.
  • You do not need a library card to enter.
  • Entries must be your own work, no larger than 18” x 24”.
  • Entries must be in a 2-dimesional/flat format (paper, canvas board, stretched canvas on frame).
  • No 3-d objects, no electronic submissions.
  • Content must be suitable for a family environment (no explicit images, words, or content).
  • Entries will not be accepted in frames or in glass or acrylic holders, or by mail.
  • Limit one entry per person.
  • All art must be submitted with an entry form ( en español), in person, before the deadline of 5:00 pm, Friday, December 6, 2019. Submit your art at the Information Desk at any MCPL branch.

Prizes

  • On January 18, the top 10 entries in each category will be on display at MoComCon in Silver Spring Library; all other entries will be available for viewing online.
  • Artists’ names will not be released.
  • Art will be judged on creativity, style, and appeal.
  • Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in child (grade K–5), teen (grade 6–12), and adult (ages 18+) categories.
  • Winners will be notified by email or phone prior to MoComCon.
  • Prizes will be available for pickup at Silver Spring Library on January 20, 2020 during MoComCon. If winners cannot attend MoComCon, prizes will be sent back to submission branch with artwork and can be pickedup after February 1.
  • After February 1, your artwork will be available for pick up from the library branch it was submitted to.

Cosplay Contest

Dress up as your favorite character from any fandom, book, television show or movie, or invent your own original character!

Contestants must pre-register on the 3 rd Floor starting at 1:00 PM (limit: 20 entrants per age group).

Contestants will be judged and prizes awarded according to age group (0–12, 13–17, 18+).

All contestants must report to the contest area on the 3rd floor, with their numbered badge, no later than 3:15 pm. Contest begins promptly at 3:30 pm and may run until 4:30 pm.

Guidelines

  • There will be a 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd prize awarded in each age group.
  • Age groups are 0–12, 13–17, and 18+. A parent or caregiver 18+ must sign the entry form for all contestants 17 & under.
  • Contestant must be present to claim prize or it will be forfeited.
  • All judges' decisions are final.
  • All costumes must be appropriate for an all-ages event.
  • No weapons, including replica and costume pieces, will be allowed inside of the event.
  • Attendees must adhere to all MCPL Guidelines Governing the Use of Public Libraries and Guidelines for Behavior.
