Child Exploitation Unit (CEU) Responsibilities
CEU investigates cases involving internet crimes against children. These include:
- Cybertips received from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding child sex abuse material and child exploitation;
- Sextortion cases involving anyone under the age of 18 involving child sex abuse material; and
- The enticement of minors on the internet.
Each year, CEU receives over 2,000 Cybertips regarding illegal internet activity involving children in Montgomery County. CEU is comprised of five highly trained investigators.
CEU investigators are members of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. This international network is dedicated to investigating, prosecuting, and developing effective responses to the exploitation of children through the Internet. These crimes often involve victims and/or suspects who live outside of Montgomery County. CEU coordinates investigations with other agencies nationally and internationally to aggressively pursue those who choose to prey on children on the internet.
CEU also provides educational resources to parents, children, and educators including:
- How to talk to children about the dangers of the internet;
- How to prevent exploitive activities on the internet; and
- How parents can effectively monitor their children’s internet usage.
