July 2019 Updates

Selected Alternative to Move Towards 35% design – Shared Use Path on North Side Dale Drive

On May 9, 2019, the Montgomery County Planning Board was briefed on the current status of the project and presented the proposed alternatives and public feedback. The Planning Board has concurred with the recommendation from the Planning Staff on selecting shared use path on the north side of Dale Drive as the preferred alternative for the pedestrian facility improvements along the corridor, and Interception Concept 1 – Realignment for the intersection improvements at Dale Drive and Columbia Boulevard. In addition, the Planning Board also recommends working with the community and Planning Staff on additional crosswalks, a better connection to master-planned Woodland Drive Greenway, and intersection improvements at Dale Drive and Grace Church Road.

Subsequently, on June 10, 2019, the project team briefed the current status of the project and presented to the Montgomery County Council’s Transportation & Environment (T&E) Committee the proposed alternatives, as well as the public feedback and recommendations from the Planning Board. The T&E Committee recommends MCDOT to proceed with the shared use path on the north side of Dale Drive and the Intersection Concept 1 – Realignment, which aligns with the Planning Board’s recommendation. Moreover, the Committee also recommends the project team to evaluate the Planning Board’s other recommendations, such as additional crosswalks, intersection improvements at Dale Drive and Grace Church Road, and a better connection to master-planned Woodland Drive Greenway.

The project team will proceed with the selected alternative (shared use path on the north side of Dale Drive and Intersection Concept 1 – Realignment at Columbia Boulevard) towards 35% design. A separate public meeting will be hosted by MCDOT to share the preliminary design of the selected alternative in winter 2019 / 2020.
