Sex Assault Unit (SAU) Responsibilities

SAU investigates cases of First-Degree Rape, Second Degree Rape, and Third-Degree Sex Offense where the victim is 18 years of age or older; and cases of First-Degree Rape, Second Degree Rape, and Third-Degree Sex Offense where the victim is under 18 years of age and the suspect is unknown to the victim.  SAU also investigates cases of Fourth-Degree Sex Offenses when they are part of a continuing course of conduct (pattern) perpetrated by the same offender(s).

The Sex Assault Unit investigates approximately 300 cases per year. While staffing can fluctuate, the unit consists of seven investigators. All the investigators are highly skilled and continue to attend specialized training. SAU investigators conduct victim-centered and trauma-informed investigations. The investigations are conducted from a position of belief and support. They are not conducted to discredit a victim or to disprove their disclosure.
