Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance

Building Permits

The Montgomery County Department of Permitting Services, Building Construction Division, is responsible for the enforcement of construction zoning codes and standards, including accessibility codes and standards, and the Customer Service Division is responsible for the intake of complaints. You can contact these offices through MC 311.

Montgomery County follows the Maryland Accessibility Code which, in some cases, is more stringent than the ADA Standards for Accessible Design and the requirements of the Fair Housing Act. For information on the Maryland Accessibility Code, check this Maryland Accessibility Code web page.

A good source for questions about the ADA Standards for Accessible Design and other guidelines and best practices for accessibility in other areas is the Access Board. Technical Assistance is available by telephone on weekdays, except Wednesdays, from 10 am to 5:30 pm. Call 202 272-0080 (voice) or 202 272-0082 (TTY) or email ta@access-board.gov.
