Montgomery County Department of Transportation is working to implement Flash BRT across the County. The Veirs Mill Road Flash will be a new transit service connecting Wheaton and Rockville with twelve stations and key safety improvements along Veirs Mill Road and MD 355. Flash service on Veirs Mill Road will provide faster, frequent, and more reliable transit service, connecting riders to housing, jobs, the MARC train, and the Metrorail Red Line. Bicycle and pedestrian improvements include 3.8 miles of new and improved sidewalks and paths, four new traffic signals, and improved pedestrian lighting.

Where possible, Veirs Mill Road Flash will run in its own lanes to bypass traffic and will use queue jumps and transit signal priority to avoid traffic at select intersections to provide faster and more reliable service. The 12 BRT stations are designed to make boarding buses easier for everyone. The unique modern stations will provide weather protection and real-time transit information.
Continuous pedestrian facilities, including sidewalks and shared use paths, will be provided along one or both sides of Veirs Mill Road from Arbutus Avenue to Galt Avenue, and along Randolph Road between Veirs Mill Road and Bushey Drive. The Veirs Mill Road Flash project includes additional protected crossings of Veirs Mill Road to reduce the distance between locations where it is safe for pedestrians to cross. These new and upgraded facilities will increase access to the Flash stations and enhance safety along the corridor.

The interactive map can be used to explore the final design of the Veirs Mill Road Flash project. The map shows the bus rapid transit elements and pedestrian and bicycle improvements along the Veirs Mill Road Flash corridor, including the locations of the Flash stations, where buses would run in dedicated lanes and in mixed traffic, and the locations of easements, temporary construction work areas, new sidewalks and shared use paths, and more.
The Veirs Mill Road Flash BRT project reached a major milestone in September 2025 with 100% of the final design now complete. As the project moves toward construction, utility work has begun, and property acquisitions are underway with small portions of property needed to build the project—no residences or businesses will be acquired. The project team will continue engaging with the community through public meetings and one-on-one discussions. Fall 2025 Veirs Mill Road Flash BRT Project Flyers: English and Español
MCDOT will be out in the community in Fall 2025 as we prepare to build the Veirs Mill Road Flash. We will be holding events and speaking with community members to provide updates.
Implementing the transit, bicycle, and pedestrian improvements will require Montgomery County to acquire property along the corridor (information about MCDOT’s Property Acquisition Section is available here). We have worked to minimize the need for additional property; however, we anticipate needing small amounts of property from multiple owners. Outreach to property owners started in February 2025. The property acquisition process will include:
