I didn’t even realize I was experiencing abuse. I was diagnosed with breast cancer ten years ago and had a mastectomy. My abuser would come home from work and yell at me because he felt I wasn’t supporting the household since I couldn’t work. He told me that my breasts were what he liked most about me, and now they were gone. It was emotional abuse.
I lost my self-esteem and was carrying a lot of shame. When it is physical abuse, people can see the wounds. It is different from emotional abuse. Someone walking in my shoes would have been feeling as though they hit rock bottom. I wore flats, just barely making it each day as a mom recovering from breast cancer and abuse.
I heard about the Career Catchers program after leaving my abuser, thanks to people in my church and my friends. I wish more people would learn about the Family Justice Center. So many doors would open for them.
If you are a victim, there are organizations that can help; they just need to know you need assistance.
Today, right now, I am wearing high heels. I am in a good place, and I am happy.
