Wheaton Arts and Entertainment District Receives Achievement Award

The Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) announces that the Wheaton Arts and Entertainment (A&E) District is receiving its 2017 Award for Outstanding Achievement. This MSAC bi-annual award celebrates the accomplishments of one of Maryland's A&E Districts, showcasing its work toward promoting community involvement, tourism and revitalization.

The 2017 award recognizes Wheaton’s stellar efforts in highlighting the unique mix of artistic and cultural traditions, the establishment of new initiatives and partnerships, and its thoughtful approach to developing a strategic plan that will guide Wheaton through a period of tremendous physical redevelopment in the coming years.

“This is great news,” said Wheaton Urban District Advisory Committee Vice Chair Ali Oliver-Krueger. “This recognition is a welcome validation of our efforts as an emerging A&E District. Thanks to the energies of local artists and the support of the Wheaton Cultural Projects Grant program by the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, we're already seeing some incredible energy and growth surrounding the arts in Wheaton. We're all excited about what lies ahead for our budding Arts & Entertainment District.”

“I am proud of this accomplishment, and grateful to everyone who has worked tirelessly to cultivate and support our thriving arts in the County, particularly in Wheaton,” said Councilmember Nancy Navarro, whose district includes Wheaton. “Recently, we celebrated the groundbreaking for the Wheaton Redevelopment Project--an investment of nearly $170 million-- which marks a pivotal moment in the overall revitalization of Wheaton. I look forward to celebrating more milestones in Wheaton as we continue to make progress. Wheaton's time is now!”

Maryland's 24 A&E Districts promote arts-induced economic development and revitalization while supporting thousands of jobs and stimulating over $570 million in economic activity each year.

The Maryland State Arts Council re-designated Wheaton Urban District as an Arts and Entertainment District for another decade.  For more information, click on the link for a WHAG-TV news story.  You can also go to the website.
