Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month 2022

Back to Commemorative Programs

On May 3, 2022, the Montgomery County Council commemorated Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, which is recognized nationally throughout the month of May to acknowledge the roles that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have played in our history and celebrates their achievements and contributions.

The commemoration was held at the Council Office Building in Rockville, Md. and included comments from Maryland State Senator Susan Lee, Maryland State Delegate Lily Qi, Maryland State Delegate Kumar Barve, Dr. Alan Cheung, Devang Shah and a special video message from U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Katherine Tai.

The theme of this year’s commemoration was “Advancing Asian American and Pacific Islander Leaders Through Collaboration in the Arts” and included a video documenting Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders making a difference in their communities through film, dance, music and other forms of art.

The proclamation video showcased the work of improvisational Chinese dulcimer instrumentalist Chao Tian, classical Indian dancer Oishee Ghosh, fashion designer and entrepreneur Doyle Song, singer and songwriter Rui Fu, Hindustani classical violinist Nistha Raj, documentary filmmaker Yi Chen, painter Mau-Don Nuyen and DJ and music producer Chhayrithy Chhuan. The Council is grateful to all the residents who attended and shared their experiences.
