There are two much sought after and very limited collections of whiskey that are released in the fall every year.

The first collection, usually released in late September, is the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection.
The 5 products included in this collection are William L. Weller Bourbon, Eagle Rare 17yr Bourbon, George T. Stagg Bourbon, Thomas Handy Rye and Sazerac 18yr Rye.

The second collection, usually released in late October, is Pappy Van Winkle.
The 6 products included in this collection are Pappy Van Winkle 10yr Bourbon, Pappy Van Winkle 12yr Bourbon, Pappy Van Winkle 15yr Bourbon, Pappy Van Winkle 20yr Bourbon, Pappy Van Winkle 23yr Bourbon, Pappy Van Winkle 13yr Rye.

As the desire of great Whiskey has increased, the supply has not been able to keep up.
While the Montgomery County Department of Liquor Control typically receives more of an allocation than the rest of Maryland (and often the entire Mid-Atlantic), there may be a few cases available of one of the Pappys, but 8,000 customers that want it (this number grows every year).

We have instituted a lottery system to create a level playing field for all customers seeking these items.

As the time gets closer to the release date from the distillery, communication begins!

  • We generate a survey which asks customers to rank their preference of one bottle in order from first choice to 5th or 6th choice. The survey is what enters customers into the lottery. We also give a choice of three Montgomery County Department of Liquor Control Retail Stores for purchase. The survey stays open for a predetermined time period (usually two weeks). When the survey closes, it is analyzed and duplicate entries are removed. Customers are assigned a unique reference number.
  • When the survey closes, a second email will go out alerting customers of their lottery reference number. When the delivery from the distillery is received, the bottles are inspected for damage or shortages. This is when the lottery numbers are chosen. If we receive 200 bottles, 200 numbers are drawn. One bottle is assigned per customer. Customers will be assigned the highest ranking bottle on their preference list of the products available.
  • After the bottles are assigned, a third email will go out announcing the selected lottery numbers. Results will be posted on this page. The bottles will be assigned to a Retail Store location for purchase.
  • A fourth email will go out only to the selected customers detailing what bottled was selected and which store it will be available. Customers will have a short period of time to pick up their bottle. Customers will arrive to one of the 3 locations to pick up their bottle. The store staff will be made aware of the customers and their assigned bottles. Customers will be asked to present identification at the time of purchase, regardless of age.
  • If bottles have not been picked up, and there are leftover bottles, they will be reassigned via lottery draw. These newly selected customers are emailed separately.

Last year, Montgomery County received 132 bottles of Pappy Van Winkle and 216 bottles of Buffalo Trace Antique Collection.
