Say Thank You and Nominate Your Favorite Crossing Guard!

Our crossing guards make a tremendous contribution to protecting kids on the move and we want to recognize their hard work through this campaign devoted to saying thank you.  There are two parts to the campaign: thanking crossing guards and nominating one of our County crossing guards as America’s Favorite Crossing Guard.

Thanking Your Favorite Crossing Guard

During October and November, we are asking parents, students and communities at large to show their appreciation for their favorite crossing guard by posting a photo on social media and using the hashtags #CrossingGuard #MoCoWalkSafe.

Nominate America’s Favorite Crossing Guard

Parents, students and communities can submit their crossing guard to be America’s Favorite Crossing Guard through a form on the Safe Kids website ( https://www.safekids.org/crossing-guard or http://bit.ly/2eGNAcs). Entries will be accepted through November 14.

If your crossing guard becomes America’s Favorite Crossing Guard your school could win up to $10,000!

Ideas for Parents, Students and Communities

  • Crossing guards help our children get to school safely. Take some time to show appreciation for what they do. Here are some ideas:
  • When you pass by a crossing guard, stop and say “thanks!”
  • Take a photo of you and your crossing guard and post it using #CrossingGuard and tag Safe Kids so we can see it and retweet/repost it
  • Go to safekids.org and download and print a Thank You Card and have your child sign it and give it to the crossing guard
  • Host a meet and greet with coffee and donuts so parents can get to know your crossing guard
  • Host a pep rally at the school in honor of the crossing guard.

About Crossing Guards

  • According the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are 11,040 crossing guards serving elementary and secondary schools across the United States.
  • Crossing guards are responsible for controlling traffic to provide the safest environment possible for students and other residents as they walk, or bike, to and from school.
  • Crossing guards are essential personnel in school zones and their presence can help enforce slower speed limits and keep students safe.
  • Crossing guards monitor unsafe behavior by children, such as darting into the street without looking or crossing against a traffic signal; and from drivers, such as speeding in school zones.
  • Crossing guards monitor and report any incidents or conditions that present a potential safety hazard to pedestrians.
