It's Back to School Time

We have been busy preparing for the start of the school year. We were at the MCPS Back to School Fair and got to meet many students and parents. We are also starting to visit schools to share tips for walking and biking to school and information about traffic safety. View our photos. MCPS Back to School Fair 2022 | Flickr

Montgomery County Ag Fair

MCDOT was at the Fair again this year! We hope you visited our tent to learn more about pedestrian and bicycling safety. You may even win a prize. The Fair ran August 12-20 at the Fairgrounds in Gaithersburg. Check out some of our photos Montgomery County Agriculture Fair 2022 (Aug 12-20) | Flickr. See you next year!

About Safe Routes to School (SRTS)

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a nationwide program that aims to significantly improve safety for students who walk and bike to school. The three main goals of the program are:

  • To enable and encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bike to school.
  • To make biking and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation choice, thereby encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age.
  • To plan and build projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution.

Montgomery County’s Safe Routes to School program focuses on two main areas to enhance safety:

  • Education: Promote safety, enforce traffic rules, and encourage students to participate in the program.
  • Engineering: improve sidewalks, crosswalks, curb extensions and install traffic signs in the vicinity of schools.
