Dynamic Speed Sign

MCDOT is installing dynamic speed signs on Brink Road in Gaithersburg. The campaign is a part of Montgomery County’s Vision Zero efforts to eliminate severe injuries and fatalities from traffic-related incidents by 2030.

The project is a permanent installation of the signs, which provide real-time feedback to drivers of their current speeds. Lower vehicle speeds lead to less-severe crashes, one of the major tenets of Vision Zero. Speed is a major factor in crash survivability. The signs provide light up with a vehicle’s speed displayed when drivers exceed the posted 40 mph speed limit. The signs do not light up when drivers obey the speed limit. The displays intentionally cut off after a certain threshold of speeding so as to not encourage bad drivers to intentionally drive fast.

“Obeying speed limits is critical to our Vision Zero goals,” said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin. “Safe speeds lead to safe outcomes.”

The project includes four dynamic speed signs along Brink between MD 27 and Wightman Road. Two will be for eastbound traffic and two for westbound traffic. Motorists should be on the lookout for the existing speed limit signs and the new dynamic speed signs.
