What is a Family Case?

Family Law is the general term for the various actions related to marital relationships and relationships between parents and children. The Family Department of the Circuit Court for Montgomery County handles filings of the following family law cases:

  • Adoption
  • Change of Name
  • Domestic Relations, including divorce, child custody and visitation, child support, alimony, and domestic violence
  • Gender Declaration
  • Guardianship for minors and disabled individuals
  • Paternity
  • Psychological/Psychiatric Evaluation

To help parents and their families involved in cases resolve issues without court intervention, the Court also provides Family Division Services.
