Reduction of Speed Limits
The Maryland General Assembly, during the 2021 session, passed House Bill 562 sponsored by the Montgomery County House Delegation. This bill authorized Montgomery County to decrease the maximum speed limit to no less than 15 miles per hour on local roadways, and only after performing an engineering and traffic investigation. This formed the creation of the "20 is Plenty" Pilot Program and updated County standards for setting speed limits throughout the county with the County's Vision Zero initiative in mind.
- Studies have determined that a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling 30 miles per hour has a 40% chance of death or serious injury, whereas that percentage drops to 13% if the vehicle is traveling 20 miles per hour or less.
