For Immediate Release:  September 22, 2014

September 23 is National Voter Registration Day 2014

On Tuesday, September 23, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., volunteers from the Montgomery County Board of Elections’ Future Vote Program will be at most Montgomery County Metro Stationsas part of a massive 50-state effort to register thousands of voters before Election Day, November 4, 2014. The theme for this year’s National Voter Registration Day is  Celebrating Democracy in America.  Future Vote students will be distributing fliers providing information on how to register to vote as well as how to update your current voter registration.

The goal for the 2014 National Voter Registration Day is to increase participation by encouraging Americans to register to vote and come out to the polls this fall.  “You can’t vote if you aren’t registered,” said Mary Ann Keeffe, President of the Montgomery County Board of Elections, “so please take time on September 23 to check your registration by going to  https://voterservices.elections.maryland.gov/VoterSearch and reach out to family and friends asking them to register.”

As a non-partisan unofficial national holiday, National Voter Registration Day counts on thousands of partners and volunteers across the political spectrum. Started in 2012 for the presidential election, National Voter Registration Day is designed to create an annual moment when the entire nation focuses on registering Americans to exercise their most basic right—the right to vote.

The Montgomery County Council has proclaimed September 23, 2014, as National Voter Registration Day in Montgomery County and is working with 2,100 partners nationwide to make National Voter Registration Day a success by working as a group of organizations providing coordination and support.

Americans can register at hundreds of events across the nation and online at  www.NationalVoterRegistrationDay.org. Supporters can also follow National Voter Registration Day activities through social media on September 23 by searching #CelebrateNVRD.  Staff from the Montgomery County Board of Elections will be at GEICO in Rockville on Tuesday, September 23, from 10:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
