27th Annual Beautification Landscape Competition Award Winners

The 27th annual Landscaping Contest was open to community groups, businesses (such as gas stations, grocery stores and other retail establishments), public institutions and other organizations (exp. Homeowner's Associations) that undertake landscaping projects that enhance the appearance of commonly owned sections of commercial or residential properties in Montgomery County. Landscaping along County roadsides, medians, and other public locations was also eligible for an award.

The judges had a record number of entries to judge this year totaling over sixty seven (67) locations - including the Sustained Maintenance (previous triple winners of the Award of Excellence) entries. Seven (7) members of the Landscape Design Council of the National Capital Area Garden Clubs spent three days on the road visiting each location. Entries were judged on first impressions, design, selection, placement and condition of landscaping and mainenenace (this criteria was developed by the National Garden Clubs and has been used to evaluate landscape design across the nation).

The judges included Head Judge and Master Gardener Carol Carter, Co-Head Judge, photographer, and Master Gardener Paula Knepper, newcomers Linda Rieger and Bette Lewis, and 91-year old youngster Helen LIndsey, who was one of the best and most loyal judge (she announced her retirement this year). The other judges were horticultural experts and longtime members of the Council and were Ellen Spencer and Sandi Piccirillo

Head Judge, Carol Carter and Co-Head Judge Paula Knepper narrated the presentation and took turns announcing each winner. Her opening remarks "What a fabulous growing season we had this summer! The cooler days and abundant amount of rain, produced flowers with brilliant color and maximum size. The crape myrtles were spectacular as usual. Most gardeners have learned about the downy mildew that has been killing off Impatients, and have now switched to Begonias or other annuals".

The awards of Excellence, Distinction, Merit and Honorable Mention have allowed the judges to honor many superb landscape designs, especially in the newer environmental areas. The winner list below denotes new or environmental in each category (Commercial/Retail, Public/Institutional, Cityscape, Community Non-Professional, Community Professional, Youth and Sustained Mainenenace). Many properties were developing rain gardens and conservation landscapes, but the Chesapeake Bay was the true winner!
