Internships for Nonprofits and Government Agencies

What is an Internship?

There are varying definitions of internships.  In most cases, an internship is a pre-professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work experience related to a student’s career interest and centered on clearly defined learning objectives/goals.  An internship offers a student the opportunity for career exploration and development, and the learning of new skills; but also offers the employer/organization the opportunity to bring new ideas and energy into their workplace, develop talent and potentially build a pipeline for future employees/volunteers.  Interns can be students at various levels in the education spectrum, ranging from upper level high school students to college undergraduates and graduate students.

Post Internships as Opportunities

In addition to all the high school students using our website, college students are also looking for ways to serve. Use our website to post unpaid internships as well as traditional volunteer opportunities. You can post a very defined internship following the steps below, or use a more general description saying that you could work with a student and/or professor to customize an internship with your organization.

What to Include in Internship Opportunity Postings?

  • Include the word “Intern” or “Internship” in the opportunity title
  • Be as specific as possible about required qualifications / requirements:
  • Include age and education level (high school, college)
  • Previous experience or training needed
  • Provide detail on required responsibilities of the internship
  • Hours and timeframe – ongoing commitment, duration of internship, time of year (i.e. summer internship)
  • Detailed application process with your organization contacts

Local Academic Resources

In addition to recruiting through our website, contact our local colleges. You can also try calling the high schools nearest to you. Each high school should have an internship coordinator.
