New organizations and new staff with existing organizations are welcome to join us for our monthly overview of MCPS guidelines for SSL and MCVC website tools. Attendance required by MCPS for SSL guidelines at initial registration and then at least once every three years.

You'll get an introduction to using the online database and hints on ways to maximize volunteer recruitment. Organizations that engage high school or middle school students as volunteers will learn about the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Student Service Learning (SSL) program and requirements for community organizations that wish to show on our website as meeting SSL guidelines by MCPS.

Training Overview: 
Training participants will learn more about how to use the Volunteer Center website as a resource to post volunteer opportunities and recruit volunteers. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn more about the upcoming Community Service Month (October 2023) and opportunities for your organization to participate in our Community Service Fair on October 14 at Brookside Gardens.

  • Grantwriting 101  See  Powerpoint. This session introduced new grant seekers to the empowering art of grant writing. It is designed for beginning grant seekers and volunteer managers who are looking to become familiar with bringing their volunteers' powerful experiences to the stories we tell in our grant narratives.  Learn how to identify allies in your own agency and about methods for crafting an approach that builds on your compelling service stories and existing agency resources. Presented by Brad Lewis, former Grants Management Specialist at Corporation for National & Community Service (CNCS).
  • Networking Session - Virtual Volunteering
    It feels like virtual volunteering just started with COVID-19, but it has been around for ages and can be an important part of any long-term volunteer strategy. We'll talk about some best practices, challenges, opportunities in virtual volunteering.  See slideshow.
  • Volunteer Management Software Sharing Session. Lea Ann Gross from Montgomery County Animal Services and Corina Sadler from the City of Plano presented on their process and recommendations for volunteer management software. Every organization has its own priorities, but the session provided some resources for comparing software and some of the criteria they used to determine which software package was right for their organization.
