Agency Orientations

New organizations and new staff with existing organizations are welcome to join us for our monthly overview of our programs and website tools. Attendence required by MCPS for SSL guidelines at initial registration and then at least once every three years.

Orientation Overview:
You'll get an overview of programs and services, an introduction to using the online database and hints on ways to maximize volunteer recruitment. Organizations that engage high school or middle school students as volunteers will learn about the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Student Service Learning (SSL) program and requirements for community organizations that wish to show on our website as meeting SSL guidelines by MCPS.

  • Thursday, September 23, 1 pm - 2 pm - Creating Volunteer Position Descriptions --  Writing new position descriptions and updating evolving volunteer position descriptions are an integral component to an effectively managed volunteer program. In this session, learn what goes into a strong position description, creating accurate responsibilities.
  • Thursday May 20, 1 pm - 2 pm - Sharing Ideas About Recruitment
    This is an informal sharing of challenges and opportunities during the pandemic for recruiting volunteers. This is a chance to ask questions and share your own practices with your peer community.
  • Thursday, March 11, 2021.  Networking/Sharing Session - Checking in  One Year After the Pandemic: What Have You Learned?  This facilitated open discussion will answer some of the following:  How has your program changed/will it change going forward?  How are you planning to recognize volunteers next month? How have you shifted volunteer work online? 
  • Thursday, January 28 2021 1 pm – 2 pm  Volunteer Orientation One reason that volunteers don’t stay with your organization is a lack of orientation and training. Orientation sets up the foundation for a successful relationship with your volunteers. In this session, we’ll discuss what makes for an effective volunteer orientation, the difference between orientation and training, the benefits of a volunteer orientation, and what to consider in preparing your orientation.   • 10/22/20 - Grantwriting 101  See  Powerpoint. This session introduced new grant seekers to the empowering art of grant writing. It is designed for beginning grant seekers and volunteer managers who are looking to become familiar with bringing their volunteers' powerful experiences to the stories we tell in our grant narratives.  Learn how to identify allies in your own agency and about methods for crafting an approach that builds on your compelling service stories and existing agency resources. Presented by Brad Lewis, former Grants Management Specialist at Corporation for National & Community Service (CNCS).
  • 9/24/20  - Networking Session - Virtual Volunteering
    It feels like virtual volunteering just started with COVID-19, but it has been around for ages and can be an important part of any long-term volunteer strategy. We'll talk about some best practices, challenges, opportunities in virtual volunteering.  See slideshow.
  • 7/16/20 - Volunteer Management Software Sharing Session. Lea Ann Gross from Montgomery County Animal Services and Corina Sadler from the City of Plano presented on their process and recommendations for volunteer management software. Every organization has its own priorities, but the session provided some resources for comparing software and some of the criteria they used to determine which software package was right for their organization.
