Gift Outside the Box Campaign

Check out Montgomery County's Department of Environmental Protection's Gift Outside the Box Campaign.  You'll even find a nice certificate you can print and give in honor of your gift of volunteering!

Monetary Donations Make Thoughtful Gifts

During this holiday gift season, consider honoring your friends and family with a donation to a nonprofit or government agency. Many organizations based in our area offer easy and meaningful ways to make financial contributions in the names of your gift recipients (and typically provide them with a card or letter acknowledgement). Here are some available through agencies registered with the Volunteer Center:

  • A Wider Circle’s alternative gift program offers options to “give hope,” “give comfort,” “give knowledge,” and “give dignity” at a variety of donation levels that support those moving out of poverty.
  • When you donate to Alley Cat Allies in honor of a loved one, you’ll receive a link to an online gallery where you can post a picture and story about your friend.
  • Donations to Bikes for the World can be designated for items such as a mechanic’s tool kit or bikes and helmets for a family.
  • Community Ministries of Rockville’s alternative giving allows you to support the organization’s emergency assistance program, health clinic, language outreach program, and more in the name of your gift recipient.
  • Dedicated gifts to DC Scores help to provide free after-school programs and summer camps facilitated by trained youth development professionals.
  • Family Services Inc.’s alternative gift program includes options for contributions that will provide a week’s worth of diapers for a child in need, newborn care training for at-risk mothers, mental health screenings to identify kids experiencing depression or anxiety, financial literacy training, and more.
  • Donations to Great and Small fund specific items like scholarship for one therapeutic riding lesson or three months of care for a therapy horse.
  • The Greater DC Diaper Bank accepts donations in honor of others and provides a personalized certificate at most giving levels.
  • You can honor an animal lover with an alternative gift donation to House With a Heart senior pet sanctuary.
  • Gift donations to the Humane Society of the United States help the organization continue its message of kindness, compassion, and concern for all living creatures around the world.
  • You can make a contribution of any size to Manna Food in dedication of a friend or family member.
  • The Montgomery Parks Foundation accepts donations toward alternative gifts that include nature camp scholarships, trail amenities, tribute trees and benches, and support for Montgomery Parks’ nature centers and historic programs.
  • Donations to the National Park Trust can be made in tribute to your gift recipient and can be designated for park preservation or youth programs if desired. The organization also sells its Buddy Bison plush backpack clips, which supports park admission for under-served students.
  • Honor those on your gift list with a donation to Only Make Believe, which can fund specific items for children in hospitals such as a handmade child’s costume, props for a show, or a performance at a hospital.
  • Sponsor a rescued animal—anything from a chicken to a llama to a steer—at Star Gazing Farm, and your gift recipient will receive a certificate, detailed biography, and frameable photo.
  • Donations to The Treatment and Learning Centers can be designated for specific purposes such as a hearing evaluation, speech therapy, or employment services for adults with disabilities.
