Main Road Paving

Main Roads include:

Examples of arterial roads include Randolph Road, Shady Grove Road, Snouffer School Road, Democracy Boulevard.

Primary roads through neighborhoods include Aspen Hill Road, Dennis Avenue, Greentree Road and Fernwood Road.

Central Business District Roads include those similar to Woodmont Avenue in Bethesda and Wayne Avenue in Silver Spring.

Main Road Maintenance

These roads are usually maintained by repaving. A new layer of asphalt (usually 1" to 2") is placed over the existing surface after underlying roadway repairs are made. When the layers build up in such a way as to inhibit drainage and/or driveway crossings, the layers are milled or ground off. This allows for a new surface to be placed. The milling process is also used where many underlyng roadway repairs leave the road in a rough condition.
