Commercial EV Charging Permit & Inspection Process
Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations allow the recharging of electric or electric-hybrid vehicles at residential homes and commercial facilities.
A permit is required to install any electrical vehicle (EV) charging station. Installations for one and two family dwellings (detacheds homes and townhourses) require only the electrical permit; commercial installations require an application for a commercial building permit and an electrical permit.
Permits are required any time an EV charging station is installed, replaced, or altered.
- Commercial EV charging stations require engineered drawings signed and sealed by a Maryland PE.
- The drawings should include a riser diagram, panel schedule with equipment KVA, a load calculation, grounding detail, size of conductors and overcurrent devices and specification sheets for all equipment
- If a new service is required, the available fault current must be provided by an official letter or email from the utility company stating the variable fault current.
- In lieu of a letter from the utility a detailed calculation and explanation by a Maryland PE can be provided.
- Vehicular protection by bollards or similar devices may be required depending on the equipment location.
Depending on the scope and type of project approvals may be needed from:
- PEPCO or other electrical provider.
- Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission (M-NCPPC)
- Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
- Local municipalities (Chevy Chase, Takoma Park, etc.) or other regulatory agencies which may have jurisdiction over the business operation or process.
Please note that DPS does not issue building permits for the cities of Rockville and Gaithersburg.
Adequately prepared applications will receive the first comments within 30 days of application.
