Green Building

Green building strategies reinforce health and life safety benefits that building codes offer. Safe buildings provide resilience to natural disasters, climate change, resource consumption/management, and service interruptions due to unforeseen events.

Executive Regulation 12-20 has been submitted for adoption of the 2018 IgCC  with amendments.  It is now available in final form

Resiliency Codes/Wind Bracing

Building codes can now offer enhanced protection against the threats of natural disasters to make our communities more resilient, sustainable and livable for generations to come, which lowers the price of mitigation for building owners. These codes provide guidance on how to design, build and operate buildings to achieve these goals. They also provide an insurance industry a baseline for estimating and managing risk. This helps to control or lower the cost of insurance premiums.

Montgomery County’s building codes have always required all new buildings to comply with wind bracing standards!

SOLAR PANELS

Montgomery County helps save time, save money and the environment by offering expedited reviews for the installation of solar panels for homes. DPS helps to protect the environment by being the first in the region to use a paperless permitting process for solar permit applications. DPS helps both homeowners minimize their carbon footprint in the environment and reduce stress one permit at a time!

1800 Residential solar applications processed annually.

STORMWATER / SEDIMENT CONTROL

Stormwater runoff can carry pollution and trash as it flows into our streams, lakes, ponds and rivers, making them unhealthy. Stormwater Management is the process where we slow, soak in, or store stormwater to help reduce the amount of pollution entering our waterways. DPS also requires a Sediment Control Fence during construction to prevent dirt and pollutants from entering the waterways.

467  Sediment control permits issued in FY17.

TREE CONSERVATION

Trees are one of the most important natural resources we have, and they are one of our few truly renewable resources too. DPS coordinates with the laws and programs designed to protect our trees and forests, as well as encourage more plantings.

1,000  Trees planted as shade mitigation since 2014.
